U of U PreMed Students Looking to Help Cure The Homeless Population’s Cold

One outcome of last Saturday’s football game in which the Utes beat BYU 13 to 6 is the contribution that University of Utah students, faculty, staff and fans will make to the Utah Food Bank. During the two weeks prior to the “Holy War” football game, Ute fans and campus members contributed truckloads of food items and $7,620 in cash to the tenth annual Utah-BYU Food Drive. An art show that opened today at the University of Utah includes a painting by Randall Lake that depicts a man, having just died from AIDS, being lifted up to heaven by an angel. Lake’s “Death’s Sweet Release” is part of “Art Positive!”, an exhibit of artwork by people living with HIV/AIDS, which will show through Dec. 17 at the U’s Olpin Union Gallery. (Lake is the only artist in the show that is not HIV positive, but his work was included as the subject matter is relevant to the AIDS epidemic.) Read More

Nearly $1 million in federal money has been awarded to the University of Utah to be used to train Native American or Alaskan Native American students to become teachers. The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Indian Education earmarked the $945,887 Title VII money for preparing undergraduate students to become instructors-especially in the disciplines of math, science and reading.
