Banff Film Festival Showcases Outdoor Adventure

Feb. 7, 2013 – You don’t have to leave Utah to meet people from around the world, experience the exhilaration of climbing exotic cliffs in a remote Chinese province or skiing in the high peaks of Afghanistan. All you have to do is come to the 2012-2013 Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour at the University of Utah.

For the 22nd consecutive year, the university’s Outdoor Recreation Program will host the annual Banff Mountain Film Festival at Kingsbury Hall starting at 7 p.m. each night on Tuesday, Feb. 19 through Thursday, Feb. 21.

A week after the world tour showings, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, the Banff Radical Reels Tour will come to Kingsbury Hall with high-adrenaline films, also from the Banff Mountain Film Festival.

All tickets are on sale now for $9 at the Outdoor Recreation Program building, REI and at Kingsbury Hall. Call 801-581-8516 for more information.

“This film festival fits nicely with our mission,” says Rob Jones, manager of the Outdoor Recreation Program. “It is a wildly popular event each year and inspires everyone who attends. One of the reasons students come to the University of Utah is to take in and learn about the outdoor recreational opportunities nearby. We help them to do that. “

The Outdoor Recreation Program, located on the campus of the University of Utah, offers affordable outdoor equipment rentals to anyone and guided outdoor tours to students, faculty, staff and their guests.

Organizers promise that this year’s movie selections will exhilarate viewers by taking them to some of the most exotic locations, down some of the steepest slopes and by introducing them to some inspirational people who refuse to give up even under the most difficult circumstances.

Each year, the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour travels to 32 countries reaching some 245,000 people at more than 635 screenings. Host organizations at each tour location choose a program that reflects the interests of their local audiences, from a selection of films on exploration and adventure, culture and environment, and mountain sports. The proceeds of the tour screenings benefit a local outdoor program, community cause, or a nonprofit organization.

The prestigious Banff Mountain Film Festival is presented by National Geographic and the North Face. For more information, visit: http://www.banffcentre.ca/mountainfestival/worldtour
