U Launches New Admissions Process

Enrollment Deferment Provides Students with Security and Options

Nov. 26, 2012 – The University of Utah today announced an addition to its admissions process that makes it possible for newly accepted freshmen and transfer students to defer enrollment for a maximum of seven consecutive semesters. The process will go into effect for the fall semester of 2013.

The purpose of the process is to accommodate needs of students from extraordinary situations like illness, as well as military, humanitarian or religious service. Requests to defer admission will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

“This is an important new provision in our enrollment direction, and we strongly encourage students to take advantage of it,” says David W. Pershing, president of the University of Utah. “Freshman students who want to study at the U and are faced with other obligations, will not have to sacrifice their educational future. A deferment grants them a spot in their class at the U, and we guarantee a seamless re-entry when they are able to return. ”

Students must apply and be admitted to the university in order to be considered for a deferment. The first application deadline for fall semester 2013 is December 1, 2012. Application information is available online at http://admissions.utah.edu/undergraduate/freshman.php

For continuing students, the university’s existing leave of absence policy provides similar continuity.

This latest enhancement is part of the university’s new commitment to student success by offering a more holistic review of the admissions process and freshmen applications.  The changes are designed to increase retention, advance academic performance and raise graduation rates.
