Women’s Resource Center at the U Advocates for Fair Pay in the Workplace

Annual fundraiser event focuses on pay discrepancies between men and women

Oct. 1, 2013 – The Women’s Resource Center at the University of Utah hosts its third annual fundraiser, “What Changes the World Starts Here: Educating Women, Educating Utah,” Oct. 10, 6 p.m. at Cactus and Tropicals, 2735 S. 2000 E.

The event calls attention to the discrepancies between men’s and women’s pay in the workplace. As highlighted in recent news, Utah’s wage gap for women is the third largest in the U.S. Women in Utah are paid 69 cents for every dollar paid to men, which amounts to a yearly gap of $14,446.

“With nearly 85,000 Utah households led by women, the new data shows these gaps harm families,” said Debra Daniels, LCSW, director of the Women’s Resource Center. “Our goal is to bring awareness to this discrepancy and advocate for women to have fair treatment in the workplace.”

With the goal to retain, educate and graduate self-sufficient women, the Women’s Resource Center serves as the central resource for educational and support services. Honoring the complexities of women’s identities, the center facilitates choices and changes through programs, counseling and training grounded in a commitment to advance social justice and equality.

Tickets are offered at $60 per person and will be available at the door or online at https://umarket.utah.edu/WRC. All proceeds go directly to the Women’s Resource Center and are tax deductible.
