Corporate responsibility and Standing Rock

Protests have sprung up across the country in recent weeks in solidarity with the Standing Rock Sioux, currently embroiled in a battle against an oil pipeline under construction through ancestral tribal lands in North Dakota. Professor Erika George of the S.J. Quinney College of Law has been tracking the case and can speak to issues of corporate responsibility and human rights violations that are at play in the debate. George studies the obligations of private actors under public international law and policy. Her current research explores the evolving responsibilities of business enterprises to respect human rights, various efforts to hold corporations accountable for alleged rights violations and efforts by corporations to fill voids in global governance.
