Pentagon meeting reviews social media’s role in suicide prevention

Military officials met with mental health, suicide prevention and social media experts at the Pentagon on Jan. 18 to discuss use of social media to identify active duty military members at risk of suicide and to provide help and resources. Those attending the symposium included the secretary of the Army and the U.S. surgeon general. AnnaBelle O. Bryan, director of education and outreach at the U’s National Center for Veterans Studies, presented research at the meeting on how social media postings may predict suicide risk. Bryan is available to discuss what happened at the meeting, next steps for addressing this critical issue and her research.
