Using social movements during presidential campaigns

Social movements have instantaneous communication capabilities that allow for the immediate engagement of those who support a cause and they can quickly mobilize backing or opposition of political candidates and their policies. An example is the quick condemnation of Donald Trump and other politicians after Orlando nightclub shooting. According to Alex Lovell, doctoral candidate in political science, knowing these opportunities, politiicans (and their staff) attempt to engage likeminded social movements in order to gain support.
