Visualizing the Cancer Moonshot’s $1 billion

Recently, the White House proposed a new program designed to accelerate cancer research. Referred to as the National Cancer Moonshot Initiative, it would provide $1 billion in additional funding. Jakob D. Jensen, professor of communication, believes it’s wonderful program, but it needs to be put in context in relation to the proposed 2017 federal budget. How much is $1 billion and where does that put the total cancer budget? To that end, Jensen created an infographic with visual depictions of the 2017 federal budget and examples of how the cancer research budget compares with other expenditures, such as for the Department of Defense.
