University of Utah joins Common App, extending reach and resources used in application process

The University of Utah has made its application process simpler, more informative and widely available by becoming a member of Common App, a nonprofit organization that aids prospective students and their supporters in the college selection process.

Among its many features, Common App’s online platform provides exploration and search tools that will allow those who are exploring college to learn more about the U, its academic programs, student life and support resources, including financial aid and scholarships. The platform also allows prospective students to submit information once that can then be used to apply to multiple institutions.

The U is the first public higher education institution in Utah to join Common App.

“Common App will increase exposure and access to our institution by students throughout Utah and across the country and the world, including those who initially may not have been considering the U,” said Steve Robinson, the U’s senior associate vice president for Enrollment Management. “It allows us to highlight our campus and makes applying to the U much easier, particularly for underserved students.”

Common App currently works with nearly 900 institutions around the world and supports more than 1 million applicants each year, one-third of whom are the first in their family to pursue a college degree. The platform also provides access to a streamlined need-based fee waiver that makes it easier for low- and middle-income students to apply to college for free.

“The diversity of our membership helps us forge a direct and unambiguous path to a viable future for all students,” said Jenny Rickard, president and CEO of Common App, based in Virginia. “Thanks to our members, all students have the opportunity to easily apply to the college or university that will help them achieve their best future.”

The platform has sections high school counselors and parents. Its virtual counselor section provides an online library of articles and videos with college-related advice for students and parents. Support is available 24/7, every day of the year, through its Solutions Center.
